Focus & Structure > Focus

The Center for Peace Mediation focuses on a concept of peace mediation that can be described with the following key elements:

  1. Peace Mediation as an Art and a Science The Center is dedicated to put sophisticated and transparent methods of mediation in the focus of academic and practical attention. We take the knowledge of contemporary conflict theory seriously in its role as one of the cornerstones of the architecture of peace processes. ‘Designing’ an adequate procedure for resolving conflicts in close cooperation with those primarily affected by it promises both a successful mediation effort and a constructive, respectful peace process.

This approach to process design and mediation makes visible the recent shift to an understanding of conflict resolution as an ‘art’ as well as a veritable ‘science’ – a discipline susceptible to analysis and abstract reflection dedicated to systematically improve practical skills.

  2. Interest-based, facilitative Mediation as a Basic Concept In interest-based mediation an impartial and independent third actor actively structures a dispute resolution process with the parties. An analysis of underlying interests, combined with the application of methods generating value-creation and creativity, serves as a cornerstone of the process. The mediator manages the process without dominating the communication or having any decision making power. We consider this approach to be most effective in resolving conflicts not only formally, but comprehensively.

The Center advocates for a comprehensive and polycentric approach to peace mediation. We seek to design integrative procedures and processes that acknowledge the diversity of actors and interests on different levels. Our goal is to create flexible frameworks for the inclusion of all relevant actors which will advance the peace process as a whole.

  3. Interdisciplinary Approaches as a Necessity Contemporary, interdisciplinary conflict science proves to be well-suited for generating adequate responses to the complex challenges of multipolar and multilayered conflicts.

The Center works on achieving this objective through projects in an interdisciplinary context and by means of multiple cooperations with actors originating from different fields of expertise.
