Martin Waehlisch, specialized lawyer in public international law, is Senior Researcher at the Center for Peace Mediation and the Institute for Conflict Management at the European University Viadrina.

Biography:

Mr. Waehlisch graduated from Humboldt University Law School, and earned a post-graduate Master's of Arts in Mediation. He was educated at the German UN Training Centre, and has been abroad at MGU Moscow, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Center for Security Studies), Harvard Law School (Program on Negotiation), and Long Island University (Institute for the Study of International Organizations). For research he was also affiliated with the Institute of Diplomacy and Conflict Transformation (Lebanese American University) and the American University in Kosovo.

He has been with the United Nations (New York, Beirut), the German Foreign Office (Special Task Force Afghanistan), the German Embassy Pristina (Kosovo), the European Commission (Berlin), and a Russian refugee and human rights NGO (Moscow, Caucasus). Currently, he is also a project associate of the Berghof Foundation for Peace Support (BFPS/UNDP Lebanon National Dialogue support project).

Mr. Waehlisch is author of the module on “International Peace Missions”, and lectured on “UN Peace Mediation” and the “Darfur Conflict" for the Master’s Program in Mediation. In 2008 and 2009 he was a faculty member of the “International Summer School on Dispute Resolution” of Tulane Law School and Humboldt University Berlin. Since 2008 he also gives introductions into legal research in public international law at Humboldt Law School. In addition, Mr. Waehlisch teaches for the “Conflict Prevention and Management” course of the Master's Program in Human Rights & Genocide Studies and the Master's Program in Human Rights & Humanitarian Law.

Areas of expertise:

Human rights and legal aspects in international conflict resolution, Transitional Justice, UN peace mediation, strategic planning, analysis of peace processes.
