Conflict Management and Anti-Corruption Training for Afghan Civil Society Leaders:

Aiming to strengthen the Afghan civil society, the Center for Peace Mediation contributes to the Afghanistan project of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Government (Berlin).

In July 2009 the Center for Peace Mediation conducted in Berlin a two-week training on conflict management and transparency for Afghan NGO representatives and provincial government officials from the Kunduz region. The training held in collaboration with swisspeace and Transparency International is a part of a joint long-term project (2009-2010) to support Afghan local capacities in conflict resolution. The training is led by the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Government and financed by the German Foreign Service.

The curriculum at the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Government comprised trainings in conflict analysis and interested-based mediation as well as project management and the promotion of transparency. Furthermore the participants were offered an individual coaching throughout the program. In direct conjunction with the trainings, the participants currently work on a conflict management or anti-corruption project, which they will implement at their local communities.

To ensure that the program targets the specific needs and interests of the participants with regard to the Afghan social, cultural and political context, the Center for Peace Mediation applied an evaluation component specifically developed for the program. Likewise, during the curriculum in Berlin and an additional workshop in the conflict region, the participants were equipped with monitoring and evaluation skills for their current and future work towards peace in Afghanistan.
