Mediative Methods in International Peace Promotion
3 – 5 April 2008 | European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Berlin
From 3rd to 5th April 2008 the Institute for Conflict Management organized the symposium on “Mediative Methods in International Peace Promotion” together with the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance in Berlin.
Participants of this symposium intensely discussed inter alia the role and profile of the United Nations Mediation Support Unit and the perspectives of German and European foreign policy regarding mediation in peace processes. Also, NGO projects by the Crisis Management Initiative and the swisspeace Mediation Support Project were critically assessed. Beyond the analysis of the structures and methods of the above-named institutions, case studies were used to discuss the practical possibilities of peace processes, and were tested using training simulations.
One finding from the symposium was that the mediative support of international peace processes, must be optimized systematically particularly in terms of method in order to measure up to the special complexity of international conflicts.
