Mediation Hub: Research and Transfer Project Peace Mediation
Since 2018, the Center for Peace Mediation runs the Mediation Hub, a research and transfer project embedded in Division S03 | Crisis Prevention, Stabilisation and Peacebuilding of the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO).
Following Viadrina`s approach of mutual knowledge transfer, the Hub brings conceptual and methodological research on peace mediation together with the political realities of peace mediation actors, using the resulting insights in various ways to strengthen both sides’ work. In particular, the Hub aims to identify the operational conditions for a meaningful use of peace mediation in the German crisis intervention and stabilisation portfolio and to translate these conditions into concrete practical guidance.
Besides the continuous day to day exchange between CPM researchers and the Division S03 Peace Mediation Team and other FFO divisions, the Hub provides, amongst others, methodological and conceptual support (e.g. Peace Mediation Framework) as well as in-house trainings for diplomatic staff. In 2020, a key focus lies on analysing the typology of roles and approaches in German mediation (support) engagements so far.
The Mediation Hub is interlinked with two other Hubs that also work on peace processes at the FFO, the Research and Knowledge Transfer Hub for Rule of Law Promotion (RSF Hub) of Freie Universität Berlin and the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office Security Sector Reform (SSR) of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy Hamburg.
The research team consists of Julia v. Dobeneck (lead FFO side) who is working as embedded scholar-practitioner within the Peace Mediation Team at Division S03, Prof Dr Lars Kirchhoff and Dr Anne Holper (lead Viadrina side) who add a broader research perspective and function as sounding board, and Anna Dick who is supporting the project from Viadrina side.
